5 days of quick tips to organize and refresh your home
Day 1: Organize your decor
With Christmas coming up there will be the perfect opportunity to organize your decor after the holidays are over. Here are some quick and simple tips to make your organization for functional.
1- Place all your decorations in like categories. For example, ornaments, Christmas bulbs, table toppers, lights, nostalgic items (ornaments/decor from when you were a kid or anything that provides a memory that you want to keep safe).
2- While you are doing this donate or get rid of anything that you don't love or haven't used in a couple of years.
3- Place each item in their own container. Clear containers work best because it makes it easier to see the contents.
4- Label the containers on each end of the container and store them away.
Tip- fake tree containers are worth every penny! They keep your tree protected and all the pieces that with it. No more trying to stuff and tape the old box.
Day 2: Clean out your refrigerator
How long has it been since you checked the dates on all of your condiments and food in your refrigerator? If you are like us its been a while. Let's do this
1- Take everything out and place on the counter. Yes, we me EVERYTHING!
2- Take out the drawers and shelves and wash them in hot soapy water and dry
3- Throw out any expired food/condiments
4- Place everything back into fridge.
To really top this off order groceries the night before for pick up. After your refrigerator is all cleaned out you will be able to go pick it up and stock your fridge with fresh food. BEST. FEELING. EVER! Amiright?!
Day 3: Declutter papers
You know those papers that float around the kitchen counter, bedside tables and your purse? Let's purge and organize all papers today. Including that old filer that has way too much stuff.
1- As you are going through paperwork shred any sensitive information that you might be getting rid of.
2- Create a system that works for you in keeping them organized and in one spot. That could be binders, plastic bins, file folders etc.
3- For documents/important pictures etc that you might need to grab in an emergency I put those documents in a plastic file box organized in folders.
4- Designate an area of your home that you can keep all of your papers. It is also helpful to keep some type of mail filer nearby to organize any mail that needs attention.
Day 4- Freshen up bedrooms
Wash and change all the beds, put away clutter, dust, and vacuum all the bedrooms in the house. This is the biggest task for this week but will bring the most satisfaction when you are done. Involve your family members if needed. Or if you are like me you prefer to do it yourself (I'm working on that). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1- When washing laundry do it in smaller loads. This will ensure a better wash and bedding will smell fresher longer. Put some vinegar along with your detergent in the machine to help deodorize bedding. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2- When putting away clutter have a basket that you can put items in that don't belong. This makes it easier to carry those items to the places they belong in.
Day 5- Toys
This might be worse than your husbands cord collection...Please tell me my husband is not the only one that saves every cord known to mankind?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anyway, back to the toys. Toy organizing is a regular at my house. I go through toys about every 3-4 months. Here is my process that might work for you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1- Go through each toy and find all the parts that belong together.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2- Create a "donate" pile that you can put all the toys in that have been outgrown, or are not played with anymore. If they are missing crucial pieces or are broken I usually throw them away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3- Create like piles and place into a storage bin of some kind. My favorite is fabric bins that can be placed in cubby's or in the closet. They make some really cute designs that add a little enhancement to a room. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4- For books, consider rotating books so that they are not all out at once. Designate an area to keep out a couple handful of books and switch them out as often as you'd like. Keep the others in a rubbermaid bin. I find my kids will look at books more often if there are less choices at once and changing them out only sparks their interest more.
Happy organizing! We hope this helps you and motivates you during the after holiday slump.
